Home runs.
Babe Ruth became the first baseball player to hit 60 home runs in a season on Sept. 30, 1927. Roger Maris broke his record 34 years and two days later, hitting his 61st season home run Oct. 1, 1961. It took 37 years and some performance-enhancing drugs to break Maris’ record. Take that, Bambino.
Ethnic studies.
On Oct. 2, 1969, the ASUO Senate voted to allocate $17,000 to an Ethnic Studies Center after the University administration vetoed a $75,000 allocation for the same purpose the previous spring. On Sept. 29, 1980, the Emerald reported the ethnic studies program’s decision to consolidate with the Folklore Department to not be dropped altogether from the University. Because, you know, systemic racism and mythology have a lot in common. Ethnic studies gained full department status in 2008.
Revolution.
Eight radicals accused of conspiracy to riot at the 1968 Democratic National Convention in Chicago went on trial this week in 1969. The group included Youth International Party leaders Jerry Rubin and Abbie Hoffman, as well as the University’s own assistant professor of chemistry John Froines.
The I-fee.
In an address to faculty, University President Robert D. Clark advocated giving students control of the incidental fee. Today, the ASUO controls a budget of roughly $12 million.
Branding. Cyanide-laced Tylenol killed a 12-year-old girl in the Chicago area on Sept. 29, 1982. A total of seven died from the pills — an incident the press dubbed the “Tylenol Murders.”
