Two University students and various campus groups hope this week’s “Don’t Be A Statistic” campaign will raise awareness about substance abuse. Third-year law student Marisa McGilliard and family and human services major Adriana Cargni are organizing the event, which is Cargni’s senior project. Each day will have a theme. Scheduled events are listed below.
Tuesday (Stress and coping)
- The Sam Spady Foundation, which honors a 19-year old student at Colorado State University who died of alcohol poisoning in 2004, will show and discuss a documentary in Room 175 of the Knight Law School from 7 to 8 p.m.
Wednesday (A Day of Remembrance) - A candlelight vigil to honor those who have lost their lives because of drunken driving will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. at the EMU Amphitheater.
- Doors will open for LunaFest, a women’s film festival, at 7 p.m. in 240A McKenzie, and tickets are $7 for students.
Thursday (Drunken driving) - Students may sign a pledge agreeing to be responsible and safe.
- A keynote speaker will talk at 7 p.m. in Room 175 of the Knight Law School. The speaker has not been confirmed, but McGilliard said she hopes Mike Bellotti will be scheduled.
Friday (Alcohol abuse awareness) - A free screening of “Fantastic Planet” will be held at 7 p.m. in 100 Willamette.
- “Afterhours” at the Student Recreation Center from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday will include a Musk concert, dodgeball tournament, massages and rock wall climbing. Bring student identification for the free events.
