The Ducks sustained a massive power surge throughout their 10-2 victory over No. 13 Liberty University to get back in the win column after last night’s error-filled sixth inning that led to a loss against Clemson.
In Game 2, there was no pop in the bats for the Ducks. Lyndsey Grein dealt six innings of two hit, two run softball in 2-0 loss against the No. 4 University of Tennessee Lady Vols.
Game 1: Oregon 10 – Liberty 2
Taylour Spencer took the ball to start after throwing two innings the night before where she struck out four and gave up one run off a homerun.
The first three innings had next-to-no offense. Spencer started the game off strong: she struck out three, walked two and held the Flames to one hit. She ended the day with five innings pitched where she struck out four, walked two and gave up an un-earned run.
To lead off the fifth, the Ducks got their first hit since Ayanna Shaw’s single to start the game as Addison Amaral doubled to right field, which presented a golden opportunity for Oregon. Shaw roped a ball down the third base line that caromed to the side wall and looked to be a sure run for the Ducks, but a quick throw home nabbed Amaral which kept the game scoreless.
Liberty’s JaMaya Byrum reached on an error from third baseman Katie Flannery. Byrum stole second, and advanced to third on a bunt. Byrum took off for home and beat out the throw from shortstop Amaral with a head first slide past the tag from Emma Cox which gave Liberty a 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth.
A dormant Ducks offense awoke in the top of the sixth when an Amari Harper single, immediately followed by an Elon Butler double to right field set up runners in scoring position. A passed ball that Liberty was slow to recover scored Harper from third and Butler from second gave Oregon a 2-1 lead.
Jones walked, Cox and Amaral singled, setting up Ma’ake with the bases loaded. On a 2-2 count, Ma’ake opened the game up with a screaming line drive over the centerfield wall for a grand slam. By the end of the sixth inning, Oregon led the Flames 6-2.
Harper and Butler started the top of the seventh by adding an insurance run for the Ducks. Harper had a lead off double, and Butler’s triple brought her in. Jones knocked in Butler with a single, and Cox blasted a ball to deep center field to make it 10-1 Oregon.
Liberty got one run back after a dropped ball in center field from Shaw scored Ella Fox who walked to start the seventh.
Milhourn struck out the final batter of the game, finishing her collegiate debut with two innings pitched, one walk and five strikeouts. The Ducks took game 1, 10-2.
Game 2: Tennessee 2 – Oregon 0
A battle of two giants was set to take place in game two. The No. 4 University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers and the No. 5 Oregon Ducks. Each of the two juggernauts threw out their aces as well, with the Ducks starting Lyndsey Grein and the Lady Vols with Karlyn Pickens.
Pickens broke the record of fastest pitch in softball history last season at 78.2 miles an hour, then broke it again two months later hitting 79.4 miles an hour. And Grein just threw a no-hitter on Friday, so it shaped up to be pitching lover’s dream.
The Lady Vols put Grein in trouble early as a lead off walk to Sophia Knight and a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position early. Knight was subsequently called out on an interference call after she ran into Amaral as the shortstop tried to field a groundball – the batter, Gabby Leach, reached first base.
Grein walked two more to load the bases, then walked a third that brought in Leach. Oregon was down 1-0 by the end of the first.
Butler made a remarkable play to start the top of the third. Leach lasered a ball into right center field, and Butler, in a full sprint, leaves her feet and steals extra bases for the first out of the third inning.
The first hit from either side was a one-out Amaral single through the right side of the field with one out in the bottom of the third. Tennessee right fielder Leach made an incredible play on a Butler fly-ball. Amaral tagged up from second and Shaw attempted to tag up at first, but she was thrown out at second base, which ended the inning with a 9-4 double play and Tennessee still leading the Ducks 1-0.
The Ducks and Lady Vols traded off scoreless frames. Both teams continued to play rock solid defense, and through the top of the fifth, Grein had yet to surrender a hit. Despite that, Oregon could not crack Pickens as the Ducks still trailed 1-0.
Grein finally surrendered a hit in the sixth inning, a lead off double to Leach. The Lady Vols scored Leach just two batters later on an Ella Dodge double that landed in the same part of the field as Leach’s. At the end of the sixth, the Lady Vols led Oregon 2-0.
Oregon got the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but couldn’t scratch it across. Pickens struck out nine, walked four and gave up three hits on 115 pitches. The Ducks 2-0 loss was the first time Oregon has been shut out since May 8, 2025 against Michigan.
Oregon will play its final game at the NFCA Leadoff Classic as it takes on Southeastern Louisiana University Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. PST.
