The Oregon women’s tennis team (7-1) completed its second shutout of the day in a 4-0 demolition of the Seattle University Redhawks (0-4).
The match opened with a cut throat doubles round that came down to the final set.
Virginia Crocker and Hadley Appling gained the advantage early and never looked back as they crushed their opponents 6-1.
Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons fell behind 3-0, but came back to tie it. Their opponents took the next two games, but they came back again to tie it at five. They just could not pull ahead and lost their match 7-5.
Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto were in a close battle that moved back and forth throughout. They were tied at five, but Furutani and Santitto capitalized in a deuce to win 7-5 and give Oregon the doubles point.
The singles rounds were a different story as the Ducks dominated from top to bottom.
“We got off to a rough start,” Jagare said. “Then we kind of got back into it, but we didn’t quite get it (in doubles). Then I just felt like going for it all in the singles, and that kind of mindset helped me through it.”
Jagare had the lead from the beginning and maintained full dominance all the way through, taking the first round 6-0. She took another early lead in her second round on her way to a 6-1 win to claim her match.
Symons fell behind early and was never able to catch up, losing her first round 6-2. She took the lead to start her second round, but it would not be finished.
Crocker was also ahead early and never let up on her way to a 6-0 win in the first round. Her opponent put up more of a battle in the second round, but that too would go unfinished.
Patsy Daughters was leading fairly early and eased her way to a 6-1 win in her first round. She jumped ahead to start the second round, which would also remain unfinished.
Bridget Mihulka had a slight lead to start that only got bigger as she took the first round 6-1. She jumped right back ahead in the second round and gave her opponent no chance as she claimed the match with a 6-0 victory.
Furutani was another Duck who took the early lead and gave her opponent no chance in the world, winning the first round 6-0. Her second round started closer, but she regained the advantage in no time, taking it 6-2 to win the match for the Ducks.
Oregon travels to Tucson, Arizona for another double header Feb. 20. The first match is at 8:00 a.m. against Grand Canyon University.
