Oregon women’s tennis (7-2) traveled to Tucson, Arizona to participate in three matches in the Red-Blue Invite. Its weekend started on a sour note, though, as it was defeated 4-2 by the Grand Canyon University Lopes (5-4) on Friday.
It was a promising start for the Ducks, who got on the board first in the doubles round, winning 2-0. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto had no trouble in their match as they cruised their way to a 6-0 shutout. Virginia Crocker and Hadley Appling were trailing 5-3 in their match, but it would go no further.
Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons were in a close one with their opponents, but they held on for a 6-4 win to give the Ducks the doubles point.
It was during singles when things took a turn.
Bridget Mihulka dominated her match, winning the first set 6-0. Her opponent got on the board a couple times in the next set, but Mihulka had no problem holding her ground, winning 6-2 to claim her match.
Patsy Daughters struggled in her match. She was able to put up a small fight here and there, but ultimately lost 6-3 in both sets to give GCU its first point of the match.
Crocker had nothing going right in her first set, losing 6-0. She responded tremendously in the second set, but her opponent was not letting up. They went into a tiebreaker, where Crocker fell short 8-6 as the Lopes evened up the match.
Jagare struggled a lot in her first set and was shut out 6-0. She bounced right back and dominated the second set 6-1. After a long, hard-fought third set, Jagare was defeated 6-4 as GCU took the lead.
Symons was in a dog fight in her first set, where she would come up just short 7-6, losing 7-3 in the tiebreaker. She responded tremendously, winning her second set 6-2. Symons was leading early in her third set, but it would go unfinished.
Furutani had a hot start to her singles match, winning the first set 6-1. Her opponent came back with a lot of fire in the second set, forcing a tiebreaker and beating her 7-2. From there, Furutani couldn’t put anything together as she would lose 6-1 in the final set and claim the match for the Lopes.
Action continues in the Red-Blue Invite as Oregon faces the University of Denver next. Doubles is scheduled for this afternoon at 3 p.m., which will be followed by singles on Saturday at 7 a.m.
