In its second match of the Red Blue Invite, Oregon women’s tennis (8-2) had no trouble taking care of the University of Denver (6-3) in a 4-1 victory.
The Ducks took the early advantage yesterday during doubles, which they won 2-0. Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons saw a small fight from their opponents, but they had the clear upper hand, winning their match 6-3. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto were in a dog fight in their match. They went into a tiebreaker and were trailing 7-6 when doubles was called. Virginia Crocker and Hadley Appling were also in a close battle, but they pulled ahead 6-4 to claim the doubles point for Oregon.
This morning, action resumed with singles and the Ducks maintained the momentum.
Bridget Mihulka handled her opponent, winning 6-2 in both sets to claim her match. Symons saw a bit of a battle from her opponent, but she was able to stand strong and win her first set 6-4. The second set was a similar story, as Symons pulled away with a 6-3 victory to win her match.
Patsy Daughters battled her opponent in the first set, but ultimately came up short 6-4. She stood no chance after that as her opponent caught fire in the second set to beat her 6-1 and give Denver its only point of the match.
Jagare was in a tight battle in her first set, but managed to pull ahead in a tiebreaker 7-5. She fell behind 5-1 in her second set, but the match would go unfinished. Crocker was also in a close one. She beat her opponent 6-3 in the first set, but the second set was much closer. They were tied at five when the match was called.
Furutani had no problem in her first set, winning 6-2. Her opponent responded with a tremendous fight in the second set, but Furutani held her ground to win 7-5 in a tiebreaker and claim the match for Oregon.
The Ducks return to action this afternoon at 12:30 p.m. when they take on the home team, the Arizona Wildcats, for the final match of the Red Blue Invite.
