The first game of the Oregon Classic on Friday ended in a decisive 10-1 win for No. 18 Oregon softball. The Ducks (9-6) were propelled to the quick win by Elon Butler’s hot bat. She drove in a total of six runners on the day, all coming in the first two innings. That gave starter Lyndsey Grein all the run support she needed, and more, as she shut down the Stetson offense from the circle.
In the first inning, Butler lasered a ball into the left center field gap to drive in her first two runners of the day. In the next, she drilled a low line drive into the same part of the field for a grand slam, putting the Ducks up by six early.
She wasn’t the only Ducks player to launch a ball at home. Addison Amaral completely demolished a pitch in the third inning to left field for a two run shot which landed halfway up the black safety netting beyond the outfield fence.
Rounding out the scoring for Oregon was a Braiesey Rosa single up the middle in the bottom of the fourth, giving the Ducks their 10th and final run of the day.
In the circle, Grein was as good as one could expect. She was perfect through her four innings of work, not allowing the Hatters to get anything going on offense. Grein had a streak of eight strikeouts in a row from the first through the third inning. She was removed in the top of the fifth for Rowan Thompson.
Thompson made her first appearance of the season and while she did give up a homerun to end the shutout, she got through the rest of the inning unscathed.
To end the day, the Hatters were only able to log one run on one hit through five innings. The Ducks scored in every inning they played and didn’t have much to do on defense as Grein was lights out in the circle.
The next game will be at 3:30 p.m. against Idaho State University.
