Oregon men’s tennis (9-2) finished off out of conference play with a brutal beatdown, 6-1 over the University of North Carolina Wilmington (2-5) in Eugene.
The Ducks got going immediately, winning doubles 2-0. Cameron Burton and Lachlan Robertson handled their opponents in a 6-2 win. Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan had a closer match, but it wouldn’t be finished.
Matthew Burton and Pierre Mouesca had a small fight from their opponents, but not enough to faze them, as they claimed the doubles point for Oregon with a 6-3 win. Entering singles, Oregon had no trouble maintaining its momentum.
Matthew Burton was no match for his opponent, winning the first set 6-0. His opponent improved slightly in the second set, but Burton still took care of him 6-2. Mouesca saw similar success in his match. He won 6-1 in the first set and 6-2 in the second.
Robertson’s opponent put up a fight, but it wasn’t enough. He would pull away 6-4 in both sets to win his match. Sam Olszakowski was in a similar battle which ended with the same result. He too won both his sets 6-4 to tack on another point to Oregon’s lead.
Russell Soohoo struggled a bit. His opponent took the first set 6-3. Soohoo put up a great fight in the second set, but fell short in a tiebreaker, 7-5 to give UNCW its only point of the match.
Breazu was in a tight battle his entire match. The first set went into a tiebreaker, where he pulled ahead 7-5. His opponent was still right with him in the second set, but Breazu held his ground for the 6-4 win to claim the match for the Ducks.
Oregon travels to Illinois to open Big Ten play against the Fighting Illini on March 6 at 4 p.m.
