It was a promising start for Oregon women’s tennis (8-4, 0-1 Big Ten) when it hosted the No. 49 Maryland Terrapins (9-1, 1-0 Big Ten) but were ultimately defeated 4-2 in the Big Ten opener.
The Ducks got on the board first with the doubles point.
Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons handled their opponents in a 6-3 victory. Virginia Crocker and Hadley Appling battled their opponents, but fell short 6-4. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto were in a dog fight that went into a tiebreaker, where they would emerge victorious 7-6 to give Oregon the 2-1 doubles win.
The match remained neck-in-neck through singles.
Jagare eased her way to a win, claiming her first set 6-2, and her second 6-3 to put the Ducks up 2-0.
From there, it was all Maryland.
Symons was in a close one through three sets with her opponent. She dropped the first set 6-4, but responded in the second with a 6-4 win of her own. Symons was unable to hold her ground in the final set, losing 6-3.
Crocker’s match unfolded exactly the same way, losing 6-4 in her first set, answering with a 6-4 win in the second, and then falling 6-3 in the final set.
Furutani put up a tremendous fight in her first set, but came up short in a tiebreaker 7-6. She battled again in the second set, but could not pull ahead, losing 6-4.
Patsy Daughter dominated her first set 6-1. Her opponent fought back in the second, winning 7-6 in a tiebreaker. The third set would not be finished.
Bridget Mihulka struggled in her first set, losing 6-3. She had a great response in the second as she dominated 6-2. Mihulka continued to fight in her final set. She forced a deuce before losing 7-5 to conclude the match.
Oregon returns to action Sunday March 8, when they host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights at 11 a.m.
