No. 58 Oregon men’s tennis (10-3, 1-1 Big Ten) rebounded nicely from its crushing shutout loss to Illinois on Friday with a 4-1 win at Northwestern (12-4, 1-1 Big Ten), picking up its first road win of the season. It contained several tight matches in doubles and singles, but the Ducks held their ground when it mattered most.
Doubles was hard fought by both sides. Northwestern took the first match 6-4, but Oregon took over after that. It won the second match 6-4, and then took the final match 6-3 to claim the 2-1 win.
Entering singles, the Ducks kept the momentum on their side. Vlad Breazu had a close first set, but had the slight advantage to win 6-4. He kept his foot on the gas in the second set, winning 6-3 to claim his match.
Declan Galligan struggled in his match. He battled in the first set, but fell short 6-4. It was a similar story in the second set as Galligan’s opponent held his ground to win 6-3 and give Northwestern its only point of the match.
Matthew Burton got off to a slow start. He was able to battle in his first set, but could not pull ahead, losing 6-4. Burton caught fire in the second set, winning 6-2. The final set was a nail biter, but Burton pulled ahead in the tiebreaker 7-5.
Lachlan Robertson also had a tight match. His first set went into a tiebreaker, where he came out on top 7-5. The second set was also decided by a tiebreaker. This time, Robertson could not top his opponent, who tied their match with a 7-5 win. In the final set, Robertson took over, winning 6-4 and claiming the victory for Oregon.
The Ducks return home March 13, when they take on the Indiana Hoosiers at 5 p.m.
