Oregon women’s tennis (9-4, 1-1 Big Ten) was firing on all cylinders in its 4-0 shutout at home over No. 64 Rutgers (6-4, 0-2 Big Ten). After struggling against a ranked Maryland team on Friday, the Ducks showed they can compete with the powerhouses in the Big Ten.
The Ducks got going immediately in doubles. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto dominated their match in a 6-0 shutout. Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons were in a tight battle, but it would not be decided. Patsy Daughters and Bridget Mihulka also took full dominance of their opponents in a 6-1 win to give Oregon the doubles point.
The singles matches were the same story. Daughters gave her opponent no chance, winning the first set 6-0. Her opponent got on the board in the second set, but was still no match for Daughters, who ran away with a 6-1 win.
Mihulka eased her way to a win in the first set, 6-2. Her opponent responded with some fight in the second set, but Mihulka maintained the advantage, winning 6-4.
Jagare was in a close battle with her opponent, but she had the slight advantage in the first set, winning 6-4. Her opponent still showed signs of life in the second set, but Jagare held her ground for the 6-3 win to claim the match for Oregon.
The Ducks return to action March 13, when they host the Washington State Cougars at 11 a.m.
