The unranked Iowa Hawkeyes (8-8, 2-3 Big Ten) put up quite a battle on their home court with the No. 64 Oregon women’s tennis team (11-5, 2-2 Big Ten), but the Ducks proved why they’re the ones with a number next to their name in a 4-2 win in Iowa City. Iowa won at least one set in every match, but Oregon had just enough to secure crucial wins.
The Hawkeyes struck first in doubles, but Oregon rebounded nicely to win 2-1.
Patsy Daughters and Bridget Mihulka trailed the whole way in their match and were defeated 6-1. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto saw a bit of a fight from their opponents, but they were able to take care of business in a 6-3 win. Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons had their opponents all their heels the whole way through, but they maintained the slight advantage to come out on top 6-4, and give Oregon the doubles point.
The back and forth action continued through singles.
Symons took an early 2-0 lead, but her opponent won the next three games. They exchanged games from there until her opponent the last two games to win 6-4. Symons took the early lead again in her second set, but once again, her opponent came back to tie it before pulling ahead 7-5 to win their match.
Jagare fell behind early. Trailing 5-1, she came all the way back to tie it, but still fell short 7-5. Her second set was another tight one that went to a tiebreaker, where she was defeated to conclude her match.
Virginia Crocker took an early lead and eased her way to a 6-2 win in her first set. She fell behind to start her second set, but came back to tie it at four. They would go to a tiebreaker, where Crocker was defeated to force a third set, which would not be finished.
Daughters shot out to an early advantage, but her opponent kept fighting, before eventually tying it at five. They would go to a tiebreaker, where Daughters fell short. Her opponent put up a fight again in the second set, but Daughters had the advantage this time to win 6-4. She had no trouble in the final setting, winning 6-2 to claim her match.
Furutani was trailing early in her first set and could never really get back in it, losing 6-2. She struck first in her second set, taking a 4-0 lead. Her opponent had some fight after that, but she still evened up the match with a 6-3 win. Her final set was very tight, but Furutani came through when it mattered to win the set 7-5 and her match.
Mihulka had a 5-1 lead in her first set. Her opponent showed signs of life after that, but she was still able to close it out with a 6-3 win. Her second set was very tight all the way through, but she fell short in the end 7-5. Her final set was another close one, but Mihulka had the slight advantage to win 6-4 and give Oregon the victory.
The Ducks travel to Lincoln, Nebraska to take on the Cornhuskers Mar. 22 at 9 a.m.
