No. 46 Oregon men’s tennis (13-4, 4-2 Big Ten) was no match for the No. 35 Wisconsin Badgers (12-5, 3-4 Big Ten) in a 4-0 shutout loss on the road. Once the match reached singles, the Ducks never won a set.
The last time Oregon was shut out was in its Big Ten opener on the road against No. 11 Illinois. Since then, it has done much better against Big Ten teams in the top 50, but fell against the Badgers on the front end of a two-match road swing.
There was some competition in doubles, but it still favored Wisconsin.
Matthew Burton and Pierre Mouesca did well in their match, winning 6-2. They have typically been the ones to step up in tough moments, including their win in the doubles tiebreaker in the last home match against Purdue. From there, though, it was all Badgers.
Oregon’s two other doubles pairs were both cleanly swept in their matches. Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan struggled in their match, losing 6-2, while Cameron Burton and Lachlan Robertson also had trouble getting anything going. They were defeated 6-1 as Wisconsin claimed the doubles point.
In singles, the Badgers took full control.
Sam Olszakowski was outmatched by his opponent, losing 6-1 in each of the first two sets. Russell Soohoo did slightly better, but still could not keep up with his opponent. He was defeated 6-2 in two sets. He has previously shown his ability to bounce back after losing the first set, including the Purdue match, but Wisconsin wouldn’t let that happen.
Robertson put up a great fight in his first set. He forced a tiebreaker, but was ultimately defeated 7-6. In the second set, Robertson’s opponent took full control, winning 6-1 to give Wisconsin the match.
The Ducks continue their road trip Sunday, March 29, when they take on the Nebraska Cornhuskers at 10 a.m. PT.
