No. 46 Oregon men’s tennis (13-5, 4-3 Big Ten) had a strong start in its match against No. 54 Nebraska (10-9, 2-6 Big Ten) but could not find the cherry on top to finish the match. After the Ducks led 3-0, the Cornhuskers came storming back to pick up a 4-3 win with a three-set win in the final match over Lachlan Robertson. The two players at the top of the lineup were the only ones who were able to capitalize on their opponents.
Robertson has been in that situation before where the outcome of the match rests on his shoulders. He’s capitalized in those spots in the past against Utah State and Indiana, but this time, he didn’t have it.
Oregon got on the board first in doubles.
Robertson and Cameron Burton had a close match with their opponents, but they had the advantage in a 6-4 win. Matthew Burton and Pierre Mouesca went all the way down to the wire with their opponents, but came out on top 7-6 to give the doubles point to the Ducks.
In singles, Nebraska came out firing.
Vlad Breazu, who is now 4-1 in conference singles matches, had no trouble in his match. He won 6-3 in his first set and 6-2 in his second as he continues to show why he is at the top of Oregon’s lineup.
Mouesca (3-2 in conference singles) had a battle in his first set, but he came out on top 6-4. In his second set, he took full control, shutting out his opponent 6-0 for what would be Oregon’s final point of the match.
Sam Olszakowski struggled to get going in his first set, losing 6-2. He responded with a lot more fight in the second set, but still fell short 7-5.
Matthew Burton was in a close match with his opponent. He edged out the first set with a 6-4 win, but that would be all. Burton fell short 7-5 in the second set. In the last set, his opponent took over, winning 6-3.
Russell Soohoo put up a fight in his match, but didn’t have what it took to top his opponent. He was defeated 6-3 in his first set and 6-4 in his second.
Robertson had an up and down match throughout. He had nothing going for him in the first set, losing 6-1. He flipped the script in the second set, winning 7-6 in a tiebreaker. In the final set, Robertson struggled again as he was shut out 6-0 to give the Cornhuskers the match.
The Ducks return home on April 3 when they host the Michigan Wolverines at 3 p.m.
