No. 59 Oregon men’s tennis (14-8, 5-6 Big Ten) snapped a five-match losing streak in a 4-2 victory over the Penn State Nittany Lions (16-11, 3-8 Big Ten). It was a tightly contested battle from the start, but after coming up short in doubles, the Ducks used it as fuel to take over in singles. Unlike the past few matches, they did not let their slow start determine the fate of the rest of the match.
Doubles went back and forth, but Penn State came out on top 2-1.
Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan took full control of their opponents, winning 6-2. Cameron Burton and Sam Olszakowski battled their opponents down to the wire and ended up in a tiebreaker, but were defeated 7-5. Matthew Burton and Pierre Mouesca also stayed in the fight with their opponents, but came up short 7-5 as the Nittany Lions claimed the doubles point.
In singles, the Ducks rose above.
Russell Soohoo struggled in his match, losing 6-1 in each of the first two sets. That would be Penn State’s final point of the match.
Mouesca had no trouble in his first set, winning 6-1. His opponent fought hard in the second set, but Mouesca still had the advantage, winning 6-4 to put Oregon on the board.
Olszakowski had some competition from his opponent, but it was nothing he couldn’t handle. He took the first set 6-3. His opponent had a little more in him in the second set, but Olszakowski held on for the 6-4 win to tie the match at two.
Breazu saw a tremendous fight from his opponent in the first set, but he had just enough to hold him off, winning 7-5. In the second set, Breazu took full control, winning 6-2 to give the Ducks the lead.
Cameron Burton dominated his first set 6-1. His opponent came back firing in the second set and pulled ahead 7-5 to even up their match. The final set was another tight one, but this time, Burton took the advantage, winning 6-4 to put Oregon back in the win column for the first time in three weeks.
The Ducks return home for the final stretch of the regular season, starting on April 17, when they host the UCLA Bruins at 3 p.m.
