No. 70 Oregon women’s tennis (12-13, 3-10 Big Ten) was defeated 4-1 by the No. 56 Penn State Nittany Lions (14-10, 5-8 Big Ten) to close out the regular season. The Ducks had the early advantage in doubles, but once the match reached singles, Penn State took full control. Oregon won just one set in singles, which was by way of a tiebreaker in a match that would not be finished. All the other matches were controlled by the Nittany Lions.
After going 9-3 in non conference play, their Big Ten opponents took a toll on the Ducks’ success in the second half of the season. They would need to move into the top 64 nationally to be selected for the NCAA Tournament.
Doubles was a fairly close battle, but Oregon had the slight edge to come away with a 2-0 victory.
Virginia Crocker and Bridget Mihulka were in full control in their match, winning 6-2. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto were in a dog fight. They were trailing 6-5 when doubles was called. Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons also had a tight battle with their opponents, but had the advantage in the end to win 6-4 and give Oregon the doubles point.
In singles, the Nittany Lions found their fire and kept the Ducks off the scoreboard.
Jagare could not keep up with her opponent, losing 6-1 in the first set. She improved slightly in the second set, but still couldn’t match her opponent, losing 6-2.
Symons did well in her first set, but couldn’t quite top her opponent, losing 6-4. She struggled more in the second set, losing 6-2 to end her match.
Crocker could not get anything to bounce her way in the first set, losing 6-1. She showed a little fight in the second set, but was defeated 6-3 to conclude her match.
Furutani battled her opponent in the first set, but couldn’t quite get over the hump, losing 6-4. In the second set, her opponent showed more dominance, winning 6-2 to give Penn State the match.
The Ducks now wait to hear whether or not they finished top 12 in the conference, which would lock an invitation to Columbus for the Big Ten Tournament, which starts next week.
