No. 8 seed Oregon men’s tennis (14-11, 5-8 Big Ten) went to battle with the No. 9 seed Indiana Hoosiers (11-12, 4-9 Big Ten) for the second time this season in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament. Despite Oregon’s thrilling victory in Eugene last month, Indiana played the better match this time on a neutral court in Ojai, California, shutting out the Ducks for a 4-0 upset win. Despite what the scoreboard indicates, Oregon stayed in the fight from start to finish. Through doubles and singles, it saw many opportunities to get on the board, but the Hoosiers had the slight upper hand.
The Ducks struck first in doubles, but were unable to go anywhere from there, losing 2-1.
Pierre Mouesca and Lachlan Robertson had full control of their match, winning 6-2. Vlad Breazu and Declan Galligan had a little bit in them, but their opponents stood higher, beating them 6-3. Cameron Burton and Sam Olszakowski put up a great fight with their opponents, but were ultimately beaten 6-4 to finish off doubles point in Indiana’s favor.
In singles, Oregon stayed right with the Hoosiers, but it did quite have enough in any of its matches.
Russell Soohoo showed some fight in his first set, but was defeated 6-3. He did better in his second set, but still fell short 6-4 to lose his match.
Robertson put up a tremendous fight in each of his first two sets, but he was defeated 6-4 in both to end his match.
Burton battled in his first set. He stayed with his opponent for most of it, but came up just short, 6-4. In the second set, his opponent took over, winning 6-1 to claim the match for the Hoosier and eliminate Oregon from the Big Ten Tournament.
The Ducks await the release of the NCAA Tournament bracket to see which team they will face next week and where.
