After weather delayed the men’s 10,000-meter final on Day 1 of the Big Ten Track and Field Outdoor Championships on Friday, Oregon senior Luke Tewalt took to the track and turned in the Ducks’ only win of the opening round of events with a 29:49.24 time. Four of Tewalt’s teammates finished in the top 10 as the Ducks scored 20 points in the final event of the day. The Oregon men lead the team field with 38 points.
Outside of Tewalt, Oregon’s points came from three top-five throwers in the men’s javelin and a trio of top-10 1500-meter finishers, including senior Elliott Cook’s second time of the season to finish sixth. The Oregon women sit in fifth place with 11 points, anchored by Emily Fitzsimmons’ third-place pole vault finish and Wilma Nielsen’s fourth-place 1500-meter time, ahead of tomorrow’s events.
Fitzsimmons jumped 4.48 meters to earn third place in the women’s pole vault, while the women’s 1500m contained five Ducks who finished in the top 20. Sophomore Nicole Humphries finished in 20th place in 4:28.66. Freshman Ali Ince came in 13th in 4:24.01. Junior Juliet Cherubet finished 12th in 4:23.73. Junior Ella Thorsett came in 11th in 4:23.52. Then, in fourth place, Nielsen finished in 4:17.02.
Elsewhere, senior Anika Thompson came in fourth in the women’s 10,000m in 33:47.18. The women’s javelin throw featured two Oregon athletes; in 13th place, freshman Hayden Williams-Downing threw for 47.58 meters on her second attempt, which topped her first of 47.15. She was unable to improve on her final attempt, throwing for just 45.78 meters. In 11th place, freshman Greyson Glivinski threw for 48.08 meters on her first attempt. She was unable to top that for the remainder of the event, throwing for 47.79 and 47.48 in her next two attempts.
In the women’s heptathlon, freshman Liisa-Maria Lusti finished the first day third for Oregon with 3583 points. Lusti finished the 100 meter hurdles third in 13.66 seconds, jumped 1.77 meters in the high jump, which also qualified for third place, shot 11.10 meters in her final attempt of the shot put after shooting 9.83 and 9.98 in her first two attempts, and finished second in the 200-meter in 23.67 seconds.
The men’s 10,000m featured all those top-10 finishers. In 10th place, freshman Juan Gonzalez finished in 30:14.17. In ninth place, sophomore Connor Burns finished in 30:07.64. In fifth was senior Evan Burke, who finished in 29:53.43. Senior Evan Bishop came in third in 29:50.63. The only Oregon athlete to finish first in any event on day one was Tewalt.
In the men’s decathlon, sophomore Aiden Carter ended his day in third place after five events with 4029 points. He finished in 10.76 seconds in the 100-meter, jumped 7.12 meters in the long jump, which beat his first attempt of 6.97 and put him in seventh place, put 13.15 meters in his final attempt in the shot put, beating his first two attempts of 11.99 and 12.20, jumped 2.12 meters in the high jump to finish in third place and finished fifth in the 400-meter in 49.81 seconds.
The men’s javelin throw featured three Oregon athletes, who all finished in the top five. In fifth place, freshman Vlad Turcu threw for 68.87 meters on his fifth attempt. His other throws landed at 62.42, 63.77, 68.00, 66.61 and 64.62. In third place, senior Pat Vialva threw for 77.40 meters on his second attempt. His other attempts were 68.94, 70.85, 68.69 and 68.76. In second place, freshman Daniel Thrana threw for 77.64 meters on his second attempt. His other throws went for 73.04, 72.59, 74.49 and 71.48.
The men’s 1500m featured four Ducks in the top 25 and three in the top 10. In 23rd place, junior Simeon Birnbaum finished in 3:54.45. In 10th place, freshman Anthony Fasthorse finished in 3:46.54. Junior Jeffery Rogers finished eighth in 3:45.91. Then in sixth place, Cook finished in 3:45.15.
The Championships resume tomorrow with the men’s decathlon 110-meter hurdles at 7:30 a.m.
