The colorful, gelatin display began two decades ago as a spoof. Now, the annual Jello Art Show draws a crowd of onlookers who admire the silly, strange and seldom serious creations. The exhibit, this year titled, “Jellotopia,” packed Maude Kerns Art Center Saturday evening. The $3 to $5 suggested donation raised money for Maude Kerns.
The Radar Angels, originally a women’s art group, concocted the idea for the humorous art show in the ’70s.
“The Radar Angels specialized in satire and this was a perfect vehicle for that,” said Radar Angel Indi Stern. “Coming from a genre where art shows were generally stuffy affairs, it just seemed like something to poke fun at.”
The Radar Angels now includes a band that performed at the show. In 2005, Readers Digest voted the Jello Art Show “Best Funky Food Show.”
