Students get to class by car, bus, bike and longboard. A version of the traditional skateboard, longboards are used mainly for transportation and “cruising,” as opposed to doing tricks or riding in skateparks. Not only are students at the University of Oregon using their longboards to get to class they are also building their own. The craft center held a workshop taught by Seth San Filippo, longboard-maker and mill owner. At the end of four sessions that lasting three hours each students completed their own original longboard designs. While these students made their own unique boards fellow student Eric Myers was selling his handcrafted boards at the Saturday Market. Myers turned his love of longboarding and woodworking into a business to fill the niche market for custom longboards in the greater Eugene area.
