After Oregon women’s tennis took down No. 53 Oklahoma on Friday, head coach Alison Silverio said in an interview with GoDucks that she was proud of the team all-around, but she was most satisfied “with the plays we made under pressure.”
Those pressure wins in doubles earned the Ducks a 4-1 victory in Friday’s match, followed by a 4-1 win over Iowa on Saturday morning.
With the pair of weekend wins, Oregon advanced its record to 5-2 overall and gained the Ducks some confidence after falling to Baylor earlier this month.
In Friday’s match, Oregon lost the first doubles set against the Sooners but snapped up the doubles point when the teams of Alyssa Tobita and Nia Rose, followed by Kennan Johnson and Shweta Sangwan, defeated their Oklahoma opponents.
In singles action, Marlou Kluiving, who fell in doubles with her partner Christi Woodson, played for redemption. The junior defeated Zita Engbroks, 7-5, 6-1 and earned the Ducks their third point of the day.
Tobita and Johnson added singles points to the Oregon scoreboard, while Rose fell in the third position, giving the Sooners their sole point of the match. The Ducks finished Friday play with a 4-1 victory.
After the match, Silverio said in an interview with GoDucks that she planned for the team to bring the same energy to Saturday’s match against Iowa.
“We have to come out with the same purpose and continue to make the right adjustments and choices tomorrow,” Silverio said.
The Ducks maintained that purpose as they took down Iowa on Saturday morning.
To start things off, Oregon picked up the doubles point in straight sets when Johnson and Sangwan, then Kluiving and Woodson each won their sets.
Kluiving was the sole Oregon player to fall in singles play. Johnson, Rose and Tobita earned the Ducks the three singles points needed to take the match 4-1.
Next weekend, the Ducks will head to Hawaii to take on UC Santa Barbara and Hawaii. Play against UC Santa Barbra begins at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27.
