After several weeks of raising money through community events and fundraisers, the Eugene Weekly’s red boxes around Eugene are once again filled with its print editions. This week, the “Love Issue” focuses on the businesses and organizations that helped bring the Weekly back to print.
“The most frustrating part was sitting on stories we really wanted to print. I know a lot of readers rely on the print version and without it we were not bringing in any income,” Camilla Mortensen, Eugene Weekly’s editor-in-chief, said.
Readers of Eugene Weekly received devastating news on Dec. 28, 2023 when, for the first time in over 20 years, the paper was not sent to print. Earlier that month, the publication discovered a former employee had, allegedly, embezzled around $90,000 from the company.
The alleged embezzlement is currently undergoing an open investigation by the Eugene Police Department.
Several staff members volunteered to write stories for the Weekly’s website and, after six consecutive Thursdays of no Eugene Weekly print editions, today marks a new turn for the publication. Mortensen said she is ready to get out the stories the community wants to know on paper.
In recent weeks, community donations raised tens of thousands of dollars to support the Weekly. Over $90,000 was raised via GoFundMe. Mortensen attributed fundraising to “community fundraisers, large and small.” She said the Weekly received donations from France, as well.
Mortensen is looking forward to “giving the community what they so clearly wanted. They did not have to give support, but they really wanted the Weekly.”
