Dangerous or toxic toys can still be found lining the shelves of toy stores today, according to a recently released report by the OSPIRG foundation.
The report reveals that many toys today can be found toxic as the result of laboratory testing. Many toys are also considered dangerous because of their small parts or loud noises that can harm a child’s hearing.
This information comes from OSPIRG’s, “Trouble in Toyland” report, which has been released annually for the last 30 years.
OSPIRG says that the report, “has lead to over 150 recalls and various regulatory actions,” and that its work is just beginning.
“Every year, millions of children are brought to emergency rooms with injuries that could be prevented,” said Dr. Leslie Pelinka, a PeaceHealth Pediatrician. “Choosing age-appropriate toys, inspecting the toy before you let your child play with it and keeping an eye on children under six years old are all great ways to avoid a trip to the ER this holiday season.”
The report found many potential reasons toys can be hazardous in this year’s report, including: chromium, small parts, small balls, magnets, excessive noise and more.
This holiday season, OSPIRG advises parents to examine all toys closely before purchasing, and to subscribe to government announcements of recalled products and report unsafe toys at www.saferproducts.gov.
