Update: Goble has received supervised release until his next court date on Dec. 29.
University of Oregon professor Andrew Edmund Goble was arraigned Monday on 10 charges of encouraging child sexual abuse in the first degree. According to court documents, Goble knowingly duplicated or exchanged visual recordings of “sexually explicit conduct involving a child.”
Goble was arrested Nov. 21 by the Lane County Sheriff’s Office and charged with 20 total counts of encouraging child sexual abuse — 10 in the first degree and 10 in the second. The arrest followed a search warrant at a Eugene residence on Nov. 20.
Court documents allege Goble viewed, duplicated or exchanged content on 10 different occasions dating back to September, including one instance in which the file name referenced a 5-year-old child.
Under Oregon law, encouraging child sexual abuse is defined as knowingly publishing, distributing, accessing or viewing a visual recording of sexually explicit content involving a child.
Goble was denied the right to a public defender Monday, but it was not immediately clear if he had obtained private counsel. Goble was granted supervised release and released from the Lane County Jail.
He is next due to appear in court on Dec. 29.
The university declined to comment on Goble’s arraignment, pointing to its Nov. 21 statement, which read in part:
“We understand that this news is deeply concerning to our community. According to law enforcement, the individual does not present any current threat to the university community, and the investigation has found no indication that any students were involved or at risk.”
Goble — who has been at the university for 35 years and is fully tenured — is currently on administrative leave. The university told The Emerald Monday that alternate instructors have been placed in Goble’s classes for the remainder of the term.
Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect the Andrew Edmund Goble was granted supervised released and is no longer held in custody.

How in the world does it make sense to release someone who has these charges against them? WTF
