At the beginning of the winter quarter, the Portland campus student council introduced free exercise classes to its students. The adjustment came after a student survey found many on-campus residents were interested in having more exercise-related events on campus.
Fourth-year product design students Alexa Haenel and Colleen Mclnerney have consistently attended classes since the program began, adding that they wished the classes were available last quarter as well.
“It’s a really good thing, and it’s worth waking up at 9 a.m. for,” Haenel said. “The trainers are awesome; we’ve had two different ones, and they’ve both been wonderful.”
Haenel added that the trainers are truly engaged with their class attendees, correcting their forms and encouraging them throughout the session. The two also explained that they believe these classes can help create connections within the small campus.
Beyond the student body, staff members like Anne Karel, the owner’s representative for the PDX campus, also joined in on the fun. Karel attended the 9:30 a.m. class on Wednesday, Jan. 7, though no other participants joined, allowing her to have a personal training session.
“We need more people to come,” Karel said. “I’m excited about it. It’s nice to have something like this in Portland, because there are so many more offerings down in Eugene.”
