PORTLAND, Ore — On Jan. 8, federal law enforcement agents shot two individuals. The incident took place at Adventist Health’s Medical Office in Southeast Portland, according to multiple news outlets.
In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security claimed the traffic stop was targeted, intending to stop two alleged members of a Venezuelan gang.
The two individuals were able to flee the scene, pulling over near NE 146th Ave and Burnside St., where the driver also called for help, according to first responders at the scene.
The Portland chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America held a vigil in front of the Portland City Hall at 6 p.m., where hundreds of community members gathered. As tensions rose, community members moved to the ICE facility on Macadam Ave.
At the facility, the protestors were met by six vehicles filled with riot cops, bicycle patrol and counterprotestors, according to an Emerald reporter on scene.
The shooting comes only a day after the fatal incident in Minneapolis, where an Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a driver, 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good.
At 8:50 p.m. Portland police bureau announced they would start arresting individuals seen breaking the law. At 9:04 p.m., PPB took a protester in custody. A source observing the arrest informed the Emerald that the arrestee was elected the Portlander of the Year.
