Tired of the hustle and bustle of campus life? Well, if you actually look just an hour west, you’ll notice that you’re only a short car (bus or even bike) ride away from the sleepy coastal town of Florence. Yes, this is the famous coastal town where a whale carcass was disposed of with a half a ton of dynamite. On your drive in you may start freaking out in the morning, wondering to yourself, “What on earth am I doing?” It’s okay, you’re just taking an adventure, and once you pass all the RV parks on the Eugene/Florence highway, your eyes will open to the splendor that is Florence. If you’re coming in early, start this perfect trip off right and check into Siuslaw River Coffee Roasters,@@http://www.coffeeoregon.com/@@ the epitome of small town coffee shops (if this is too much to start your day, don’t panic, there is a Dutch Bros.). @@http://www.katu.com/entertainment/50-Years-of-KATU-TV-A-whale-of-a-story-that-will-not-die-142819595.html@@
Florence: The perfect weekend getaway
Daily Emerald

Now that you’re appropriately caffeinated, it is time to see what this town is all about. First of all, if you’re a big animal lover and can withstand the smell of the penguin cave at the zoo, then going to the sea lion cave is a must. It’s just a short drive north of the town, and with a $12 ticket you can see hundreds of these smelly mammals in their natural habitat.
If the drive was too much, this town is full of sand dunes and beach access. The area is littered with bays and state parks, so if one doesn’t suit your beach needs, there will be another. After a long day in the sand there are plenty of restaurants to check out. Your best bet for perfect seafood is the Waterfront Depot, or just a cup of hot chowder at Mo’s. You really can’t go wrong here unless you end up making the mistake of walking through the doors of KFC.
Your day may have turned out more exhausting than you had planned, so you might want to consider calling it a night in town. The River House Inn is the perfect crash zone. With a waterfront view in all the rooms, you are guaranteed to wake up with a Win The Day attitude.
