The Oregon Ducks women’s basketball team (13-3, 1-2 Big Ten) is off to a solid start this season, and some of the key contributors to their success have been transfer portal additions. During the offseason, the Ducks added three transfers. Here is how they are doing so far.
Mia Jacobs – Forward – Senior – Fresno State University
Jacobs has been one of the team’s best players this season, averaging 14.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.9 steals per game. The Australian forward started her collegiate career at La Salle University before transferring to Fresno State, where she played for two seasons, averaging 18.3 points, 10 rebounds and two steals per game in her last season.
“Mia is a proven winner that continues to get better each and every season,” head coach Kelly Graves said at a press conference earlier this year. “She had a breakout season as a junior at Fresno State, and she’s only scratching the surface of what she can become. We love her competitive nature and expect her to contribute in a meaningful way immediately.”
There has been a slight dip in her production from last season, which can be attributed to lower minutes since she’s currently averaging 27.4 minutes per game compared to her 33 minutes last season. Regardless of the lower numbers, she’s still one of the team’s top producers, and her rebounding and scoring are integral to Oregon’s success on the court
Astera Tuhina – Guard – Senior – Washington State University
Tuhina has been one of the Ducks’ go-to options off the bench this season, averaging 4.2 points, 2.4 assists and 1.1 steals per game. She had limited play time in some tougher games, but has had multiple memorable games, including her 18-point performance against Old Dominion University and her five steals against the University of Montana.
“Astera has tremendous instincts and basketball IQ,” Graves said. “Her creativity, toughness and grittiness will fit in perfectly with our team, and her relentlessness and passion are second to none.”
The Kosovan guard came to Oregon following a three-year stint at Washington State, where she was a starter for her last two years, averaging 7.8 points, 3.7 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 1.2 steals per game in her final year.
Avary Cain – Guard – Sophomore – UCLA
Similar to Tuhina, Cain has been a go-to role player for the Ducks off the bench, but has had limited impact in tough games. She is currently averaging 3.7 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. She’s been inefficient with her shots, shooting 34.5% from the field and 28.2% from the three-point line.
Cain played one season at UCLA, where she averaged 1.5 points, 0.7 rebounds and 0.6 assists per game on very limited minutes.
“Avary is an impact player on both ends of the floor,” Graves said. “Not only is she a gifted scorer who can create her own shot, but she is tenacious on the defensive end. Her length and athleticism are going to be impactful for us.”
She’s had a few solid games this season, with three games with 10 or more points, including a solid outing against University of Portland with 11 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals. Overall however, she’s been a low-impact player in most of her games off the bench.
