“It’s my first bingo night so I feel like best case scenario people love me, worst case scenario I just call out letters and numbers until I’m done,” says Bingo Night MC Kevin Poehner. Poehner was a welcome addition to the Ethos fundraiser, calling out numbers in between the excited Yes!’s and defeated Noooo’s of the crowd, he cracked jokes and free-styled to a backdrop of that infamous homemade Ethos banner.
During a two-hour period from 10:30-12:30pm Friday, people shuffled into the small upper level of Caspian Mediterranean to try their hand at winning ETHOS BINGO, a double-diagonal, or a blackout for several prizes donated from Eugene businesses. The Ethos Public Relations team met its goal of having every table packed with bingo-card wielding competitors; with a price of just $1 per card, the team raised just under $70 to aid with the increasing printing costs of the magazine.
“The hardest part of putting together a fundraiser like this is getting donations. People always think you’re asking them for money but it’s really just a donation for a good cause,” says Lenna Bortnick who acted as team leader for the committee behind Bingo Night. Noelle Unterberger, also a committee leader, said events like these would not be possible without the use of Facebook and website promotion, and of course, A LOT of flyering. The committee would like to thank Caspian Mediterranean Restaurant, High Priestess Tattoo, Sy’s Pizza, Tracktown Pizza, McKenzie Outfitters, and Barry’s Espresso Bakery & Deli for their generous contributions to the event.
