City of Eugene staff have started removing the Flock Safety automated license plate recognition cameras after terminating its contract with the security company.
The city has initiated removal of the cameras because Flock Safety would not have started the removal process until Jan. 26, according to an Eugene Police Department announcement.
EPD cancelled its contract with Flock Safety on Dec. 5, citing concerns with “vulnerabilities and limitations” that raised concerns about the ability of the cameras to meet EPD’s data security and community expectations.
City Manager Sarah Medary had previously paused the cameras in October following a unanimous recommendation to do so from the city council.
Staff began removing the cameras on Dec. 18. Fifty-five of 57 cameras have been disconnected and secured. The remaining two will be removed next week.
The solar panels attached to the camera system will remain until Flock Safety comes to remove them.
