The Eugene Police Department has sent Prevention Units into specific neighborhoods identified as high crime areas.@@http://www.eugene-or.gov/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=269@@ This action came on the heels of a spike in property crimes, EPD reports. The data-led policing strategy that EPD has employed relies on two tactical angles: prediction and response.
Crime Prevention Units are deployed to certain areas in hopes of limiting the number of incidents. Relying heavily on statistics, EPD is using the Prevention Unit strategy in an attempt to rein in a upward trend in crime. EPD maintains that their deployments are based on statistics taken from crimes that have recently been committed.
West Eugene, Taney Street, Highway 99, Barger Road, Royal Avenue and Bethel School District have reported an increase in a range of property crimes, including a spike in burglary, theft and vandalism. Since Thursday morning, EPD staff has been going door-to-door to speak with residents.
Residents can get involved at a community meeting which is scheduled for Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Fairfield Elementary, 3455 Royal Ave., Eugene. The meeting is open to the public and is an opportunity to speak with EPD staff to discuss prevention tips and Eugene crime trends.
