Oregon men’s basketball guard Chamberlain Oguchi has decided to transfer to a yet-to-be determined school, the Houston-native announced Friday.
“It is unfortunate when players transfer from your program, but at the same time, we recognize that Champ wants to find an opportunity that is better suited for him and his career goals and we understand that,” Oregon coach Ernie Kent said in a University release. “Champ has been an important part of what we’ve accomplished here the last three years and we wish him the utmost success in the future.”
Oguchi was instrumental in the latter part of Oregon’s 2005-06 season after taking over for the injured Bryce Taylor. That year, Oguchi had a team-best 68 three-pointers, including a Pac-10 Tournament record 14 in three tournament games. He was named to the Pac-10 all-tournament team and finished the season third on the team in scoring at 9.6 points per game, including a stretch of three straight games scoring 20 or more points.
But Oguchi’s minutes diminished dramatically this year. He played in 36 games, starting 10, and averaging 4.8 points per game.
He averaged 15.9 minutes per game but was essentially not a factor for the majority of Oregon’s season.
He finishes his three-year career with 571 points in 86 games, a 6.6 points per game average. He made 115 three-pointers and was 31.9 percent from three-point range.
