Only a few days after the fatal shooting of his son, 78-year-old Cottage Grove resident Jerry Fruichantie filed for a restraining order against his daughter and son-in-law, evicting them from his property. He cited their threatening aggression toward him and their potential ties to “neo-nazis” as the explanation for the order.
Man pleads guilty to murder of his landlord
After previously pleading not guilty by mental insanity, Miguel Angel Chavez, 25, has changed his plea to guilty in the murder of his landlord. Under Oregon’s mandatory minimum law, Chavez faces 25 years, without any option for parole. So far, the police have not released how he killed Deborah Stone, the landlord of the house he had been living in.
Chavez had originally used an insanity defense, which sent him to the Oregon State Hospital in Salem for treatment. He was considered unfit for trial until an inmate reported being told by Chavez that he was faking it for his defense.

Teacher/Coach removed from school system after sexual abuse accusations
Former Springfield Middle School teacher Chad Schacht is spending 5 1/2 years in jail after he was found guilty of sexually abusing a girl that he coached at Sheldon High School. The girl’s parents have since field a suit against the Eugene and Springfield school district for negligence on the matter, stating someone should have noticed.
Springfield Middle School said that they removed Schacht from his position as a teacher back in 2010 after an overwhelming number of complaints against him. The Springfield school district has asked for its removal from the suit, as it had “no special relationship” to the victim.
Springfield man dies after being stuck by pick-up
81-year-old John Robert Chamberlain was struck by a pick-up last week just before crossing Highway 126. After being taken to the hospital with critical injuries, he died late Saturday after intensive care at the Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend.
Chamberlain was blind and waiting on the shoulder of the road, deciding whether or not to cross the street when he was hit. The driver of the Dodge pick-up was unsure whether Chamberlain had decided to cross, deciding to accelerate because he thought it was safe. Instead, Chamberlain decided to cross, and the driver of the truck did not have time to stop.
