The Christian student coalition opposing the anti-Christian commentary, cartoons of Jesus’ crucifixion and a homoerotic centerfold of Jesus in The Insurgent’s March issue had its complaint again rejected by the student government’s executive branch.
Students of Faith filed an appeal May 23 claiming The Insurgent
violated several rules in the Student Conduct Code, ASUO President Jared Axelrod said. The group originally filed a grievance May 8 with ASUO Programs Administrator David Goward, who ruled against the group.
Axelrod met with a student senator and the ASUO multicultural advocate June 2 to discuss the appeal, he said, and the three of them agreed the ASUO doesn’t have the authority to rule on conduct code violations, he said.
“Do I think it was offensive? Yes. Do I think it was in poor taste? Yes. But I don’t think it was illegal,” Axelrod said, referring to The
Insurgent’s March issue.
The Insurgent didn’t break any ASUO constitutional rules or bylaws, Axelrod said.
Students of Faith member Michael Tarascio said the ASUO Executive’s decision misinterpreted the Supreme Court case law cited in the appeal and that The Insurgent violated ASUO and conduct code rules.
“Students of Faith will continue ahead and appeal this as well,” Tarascio said.
