In a Truth Social post, President Donald Trump commented on damage that occurred at the Eugene Federal Building Friday night.
“Last night in Eugene, Oregon, these criminals broke into a Federal Building and did great damage, also scaring and harassing the hardworking employee,” Trump wrote.
There were no confirmed reports of protesters entering the federal building.
“There will be no spitting in the faces of our officers, there will be no punching or kicking the headlights of our cars, and there will be no rock or brick throwing at our vehicles,” the statement read.
There were no reports of vehicle damage from rocks or bricks during the protest. The only confirmed damage to the building was several broken windows.
Trump also claimed that local police did nothing to stop what he described as “insurrectionists, agitators and anarchists.”
The Eugene and Springfield police departments blocked off the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Pearl Street at approximately 6 p.m., declaring an active riot and ordering protesters to leave the area. EPD later departed as federal agents attempted to disperse the crowd using tear gas, flash-bang grenades and pepper balls.
In a 20-minute filmed statement Friday night, Eugene Police Chief Chris Skinner said EPD became involved at the federal property due to a lack of federal resources and concerns over damage to the building’s windows.
Dozens of Mobile Response Team officers from EPD, wearing riot gear, stood in a line in front of the broken windows on the south side of the building before additional federal agents and resources arrived from Portland.
EPD has previously stated it would not involve itself in federal immigration enforcement or related protests.
Trump went on to urge U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents to be “extremely powerful and tough” in protecting federal property. However, he said that under “no circumstances” should federal agents respond to riots or protests unless cities request assistance.
NBC News reported Wednesday that the Trump administration appeared to have “targeted Oregon” for a surge of federal agents and a large-scale immigration operation following similar actions in Minnesota, citing interviews with an anonymous former White House official.
