No. 64 Oregon women’s tennis (12-5, 2-3 Big Ten) was met with another tough battle when it visited the Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-5, 3-3 Big Ten) and went all the way down to the wire before being defeated 4-3. After leading 3-1, the Ducks just could not put the match away, and Nebraska came storming back for the come-from-behind upset.
Oregon took a 1-0 lead in doubles. The Cornhuskers struck first with Patsy Daughters and Bridget Mihulka losing their match 6-2. Tilde Jagare and Olivia Symons evened it up with a 6-3 win. Hinata Furutani and Juliet Santitto fought it out until the end. Their match went to a tiebreaker, where they emerged victorious to give Oregon the doubles point.
The match remained neck in neck through singles.
Jagare had no trouble in her match, dominating her first set 6-2. Her opponent improved slightly in the second set, but Jagare maintained the momentum and put her opponent away with a 6-3 win.
Virginia Crocker struggled to keep up with her opponent in her first set and was defeated 6-2. She put up a much greater fight in the second set, but it still wasn’t enough as she fell short 7-5 to give Nebraska its first point of the match.
Symons went back and forth in her match. Her first set was very close, and she had the upper edge, winning 6-4. Nothing went right for Symons in the second set as she was shut out 6-0, but she took full control in the final set to win 6-2 for what would be Oregon’s last point of the match.
Furutani was outmatched in her first set, losing 6-3. She put up a greater battle in her second set, but ultimately fell short 7-5.
Mihulka had a back and forth match. Her first set was extremely tight, but she came up just short 7-5. She had a tremendous response in the second set, evening up her match with a 6-2 win. Things flipped in the final set as Mihulka was defeated 6-3.
Daughters showed a lot of fight in her first set, where she came out on top 7-5. From there, her opponent took over, winning 6-1 in the second set, and 6-2 in the third to give the Cornhuskers the match.
Oregon returns home March 27, when it hosts the Illinois Fighting Illini at 2 p.m.
