A Eugene man was charged today with damaging federal property after allegedly attempting to breach the Eugene Federal Building, according to a press release by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
Soren Emery Polzin, 18, made a first appearance in federal court today after being charged with depredation of federal property.
According to court documents, prosecutors allege a group of individuals including Polzin damaged exterior windows and doors while attempting to access the federal building on Jan. 30.
The protest that occurred at the federal building on Jan. 30 was declared a “riot” by Eugene Police, who then ordered demonstrators to clear the area. Federal agents then used tear gas, pepper balls and flash-bang grenades to disperse the crowd.
The documents allege that federal employees were inside and that Polzin kicked a lobby window until it shattered.
According to FBI Portland Special Agent in Charge Doug Olson, who is quoted in the release, this “marks a huge step forward in (the) investigation of the damage to the Eugene Federal Building.”
In February, the FBI issued a release stating it was seeking information to identify subjects involved in damage caused by “rioters” at the federal building as part of an ongoing investigation into the Jan. 30 protest.
The FBI is currently investigating the case and it will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon.
Following his appearance in federal court before a U.S. magistrate judge, Polzin was ordered released pending further court proceedings.
