A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. tonight at McArthur Court for Brian Reams, the 22-year-old University student who died from injuries after he was hit by a vehicle near campus on Sunday.
Greek Life Office and Office of Student Life are hosting the service, which is open to the public.
Marty Hermens, president of Reams’ fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, said the service was still being planned Monday evening.
“It’s just going to be a celebration of his life,” he said. Hermens added that the service will likely consist of a slideshow and speeches.
He said he expected a large turnout from the Greek community, but he said he hopes the entire University community attends the service.
Reams, a political science major from Idaho, died Monday at Sacred Heart Medical Center after he was hit by a vehicle while trying to cross Hilyard Street at 15th Avenue early Sunday morning. The driver who struck him left the scene, but witnesses say the car was a Cadillac.
Eugene police spokeswoman Melinda Kletzok said few details were being released about the case because it’s an ongoing investigation. Kletzok said that the department’s Forensic Investigation Reconstruction Survey Team is devoting all of its resources to the case.
She said the FIRST detectives have been working around the clock on the case.
“We understand that a lot of emotion is behind this,” she said.
The University Counseling Center at Agate Street and 13th Avenue has drop-in hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and students can call the center at (541) 346-3227.
Hermens said a fund is being set up to build a gym in Reams’ honor at a Catholic school in Pocatello, Idaho.
Those with information about the case can call Eugene police at (541) 682-5111.
