The Oregon Ducks (11-8, 2-4 Pac-12) found itself down big early. The Stanford Cardinal (16-2, 5-1 Pac-12) had begun the game on a 20-0 run to set the tone early, but the Ducks were not going to lay down and give up that soon. Sofia Bell hit a 3-pointer, and Chance Gray followed up with two of her own not too long after to respond with a 13-0 run for Oregon. However, that was the last time that the Ducks were able to gain any real momentum as the Cardinal were able to dominate the rest of the game in the 88-63 win.
The Ducks got off to a slow start on both sides of the ball, and the Cardinal wasted no time taking advantage of that. Stanford jumped out to a 12-0 lead less than four minutes into the game. Oregon continued to flounder for the next couple minutes, before finally being able to score its first points, finally finishing the Cardinal’s run at 20 straight points to open the game.
The made basket by Kennedy Basham opened the floodgates for the Ducks, as they rattled off a 13-0 run to make sure Stanford could not shut the door in the first quarter. The first quarter ended in a 25-15 advantage for the Cardinal.
The run for Oregon coincided with Cameron Brink exiting the game with an injury. Brink scored six points in the first quarter where she played six minutes before leaving the game.
The Ducks were able to continue building on their momentum early in the second quarter. After allowing a couple early baskets from Stanford, Oregon went on an 8-0 run to cut the lead to just six points at 29-23. The Ducks began playing elite defense during their run, holding the Cardinal scoreless for almost four minutes straight. Bell made her third 3-pointer of the game to bring the lead down to five points.
Oregon’s luck ran out late in the first half as Stanford looked determined to remove any doubt about who was the better team. A 12-0 run to end the second quarter for the Cardinal sent the game into halftime with a 43-26 advantage for Stanford.
The Ducks were able to come back and stay somewhat close in the first half thanks to 5-9 shooting from behind the 3-point arc, including 3-3 shooting from Bell.
The Cardinal came out of the halftime break with a clear gameplan, exposing the holes in the Oregon zone defense. Early baskets in the second half came in the midrange, clearly illustrating that Stanford had figured out an answer to the defense. The Ducks’ offense continued to be able to score, but with the inability to slow down the Cardinal, the lead barely changed.
Stanford’s Kiki Iriafen dominated in the quarter, scoring 10 points in the third quarter alone. She was the driving force for the Cardinal as they were able to bring a 63-43 advantage into the final quarter.
Although the game was already out of reach of the Ducks, Stanford was able to fully slam the door with a 7-0 run about halfway through the fourth quarter. Gray and Phillipina Kyei both added seven points in the quarter, but it was much too little, too late. The pair were the only Oregon players in double-figures in the game, finishing with 19 and 14 points respectively.
