Drunk driver rear-ends school bus
A Springfield woman was arrested Monday after hitting a school bus near Highway 126 and 52nd Street. There were no reported injuries as no children were on the bus at the time.
The woman was booked on charges of drunk driving and hit and run.
New sport of highlining picks up in Oregon
Some Oregonians are saying that walking a thin rope hundreds of feet above the ground provides the opposite of an adrenaline rush. Highlining, an offshoot of slacklining, is basically slacklining above longer distances — often hundreds of feet — above the ground or water. Practitioners of the sport find it calming, KVAL reports.

Federal judge refuses to implement a mandatory minimum sentence
Refusing to enact a controversial mandatory minimum sentence of five years for arson, a federal judge in Eugene has taken more caution to weigh the circumstances of an arson case involving Oregon ranchers, Dwight Hammond Jr. and his son Steven Dwight Hammond.
Calling the five-year mandatory minimum sentence “grossly disproportionate” to the crimes, U.S. Judge Michael Hogan has sentenced Dwight Hammond Jr. to three months in prison and his adult son to one year and a day for deliberately setting fires on federal land, despite pressure from the Assistant U.S. Attorney to follow the mandatory minimum law, The Register-Guard reports.
Charitable garden near the Eugene courthouse could be sold
For three years, a garden serving as an outdoor classroom for University of Oregon students, and as a means of contribution to the Eugene Mission, New Roads, Relief Nursery and other social service agencies and charities has flourished. But it appears that its days are numbered.
The agreement between the University and the city and that allowed the garden to be worked on is soon to expire.
Northwest Community Credit Union has emerged as a potential buyer of the property where it plans to build its new headquarters, The Register-Guard reports.
