Forward Mary Sbrissa will leave the Oregon women’s basketball team and transfer to New York Institute of Technology, coach Bev Smith announced Friday.
Sbrissa, from Castelfranco, Italy, arrived in Eugene in 2005, redshirting her first year. Though she has played in 12 games over the last two years, her accomplishments off the court have been heralded in the form of the team’s Harry Richie Scholar Athlete Award, which she has won twice.
NYIT, based in New York City, is a Division II school, and Sbrissa will be allowed to play immediately after transferring.
“I decided to transfer to NYIT because I felt I could complete my academic studies at the University and also compete for the basketball program,” Sbrissa said in a media release. “I really enjoyed my time at Oregon. I am going to miss Mac Court, the Duck fans and my teammates.”

Kent agrees to new contract

Oregon men’s basketball coach Ernie Kent agreed to a new contract through 2013 featuring alterations of his previous deal, Athletic Director Pat Kilkenny announced Friday.
The new deal increases Kent’s annual minimum guaranteed salary from $1 million to $1.06 million and provides $347,000 in additional salary and benefits for the men’s basketball staff. Kent’s buyout from the university also increased, from $1 million to $1.15 million.
Oregon will also hire a strength and conditioning coach for the men’s basketball program.
Kent has amassed a record of 211-134 as head coach at Oregon, and his 11-year tenure is equaled or bettered by only seven Division I coaches representing BCS schools. Oregon finished its season 18-14 (9-9 Pacific-10 Conference) last year, losing in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Mississippi State.
