Three weeks after he entered the transfer portal, former Washington Huskies starting defensive lineman Sam “Taki” Taimani announced his commitment to the Oregon Ducks Thursday morning.
In four seasons and 29 career games, the 6-foot-2, 330-pound lineman from Salt Lake City totaled 71 tackles with 3.5 tackles for loss. He also contributed 43 tackles, two tackles for loss, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery in 11 games last season.
On New Year’s Eve, the former Husky posted a photo of himself on Twitter wearing a green Ducks uniform inside Autzen Stadium, hinting at the potential of joining Washington’s bitter rival. Naturally the photo was met with harsh reactions from the Huskies’ fanbase.
Taimani will play under Oregon defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi and defensive line coach Tony Tuioti, who both joined head coach Dan Lanning’s staff this past month.
Like many of his peers, Taimani entered the transfer portal in the wake of Fresno State’s Kalen DeBoer replacing Jimmy Lake as the Huskies’ head coach.
Since late November, six players from the program have entered the portal, with three of them, including Taimani, staying in the Pac-12 conference.
The Ducks are set to host the Huskies on Nov. 12 this season, marking Taimani’s face-off against his former team.
