All hail Jacob Walsh.
The junior mashed his 32nd home run as a Duck to set a new program record during Oregon’s 6-3 win over UCLA on Sunday.
His mash came as a part of a five-run third inning that saw No. 20 Oregon (22-8, 8-4 Pac-12) take a lead it wouldn’t surrender to the Bruins (12-17, 5-10 Pac-12).
After Walsh opened the scoring with his bomb, a pair of doubles from Drew Smith and Chase Meggers added on before Maddox Molony sent a two-run shot out to make it a 5-0 ballgame.
It gave Oregon starter Kevin Seitter all the run support he would need for an outing in which he picked up his fourth win of the season. Across his five complete innings, he allowed three runs on six hits while fanning four and walking two. It wasn’t his strongest outing of the season, but it was more than enough to secure the series win for the green and yellow.
Oregon’s bullpen, on the other hand, was phenomenal. Turner Spoljaric and Logan Mercado combined for four innings of scoreless ball. Spoljaric allowed two hits during his two frames, but neither scored as his season ERA dropped to 8.76. Mercado pitched both a hitless eighth and ninth inning on just 23 pitches to earn his fifth save of the season.
A Dominic Hellman RBI single in the seventh gave the Ducks an insurance run they wouldn’t even need. Oregon remains right around the top of the Pac-12 standings as it bounces with Oregon State between first and second. It’s hard to deny that the type of ball the Ducks are playing is more than impressive as they continue to vie for the lead in a solid Power 5 conference.
The bottom half of Oregon’s lineup produced some serious offensive production in the win. The Ducks’ six through eight hitters — Hellman, Meggers and Molony — each recorded a pair of hits on the afternoon.
Oregon hit .308 with two outs and .313 with runners on base on Sunday. When compared to UCLA’s .182 and .214 respectively, it proved to be the difference in the rubber match.
With the win, Oregon clinched the series over UCLA. The Ducks are yet to lose a series in conference play this season, winning each 2-1.
Oregon returns home next week for five home games. The Ducks will face Sacramento State for a pair of midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday before taking on USC next weekend.
