No. 18 Oregon finished Friday’s second round in 14th place, which is a slight skid from its performance on Thursday. The Ducks will have to find their consistency in the final round Saturday if they want to compete for the top prizes.
However, Oregon’s individual golfer Aiden Krafft is currently placed second in the individual rankings at seven-under for the weekend. Krafft started off his second round rough, with a bogey and a double-bogey that had him one-over after nine holes.
His back half started with two birdies and an eagle, and he would not go over-par again during the day. He added another birdie on his last hole to bring his round-two total to 68 and four-under.
Nate Stember, who scored par-or-better on every hole but his first in round one, scored par-or-better on every hole until his last in round two. Stember finished the day at a consistent three-under, with four birdies, but just the one blemish on his last hole.
Stember has appeared to be the Ducks’ most consistent performer this weekend, and continuing this will be crucial to a successful final round.
Owen Avrit improved mightily as the round went on, starting with a bogey, but he recovered and shot four of his five birdies in the back half of his round. The fifth year finished three-under for the day.
After a very mixed bag in round one, Avrit’s improvement was more than welcome for the Ducks, who continue to try to push for a top-10 finish.
It was a day to forget for both Eric Doyle and Greyson Leach, who had five and four bogeys respectively. Each added their fair share of birdies, five for Leach and four for Doyle, so they were able to minimize the damage on what was clearly not their day.
Gregory Solhaug improved four strokes from his two-over finish in round one, finishing two-under this time. A very consistent round for the Norwegian, mostly due to him cutting out the crucial mistakes from Thursday.
The theme of the weekend so far has been the Ducks’ lack of consistency and failure to capitalize on some very positive stretches of golf.
Oregon needs to show real improvement in all aspects of the game in order to finish top 10 to start the spring season. The Ducks have proved capable of achieving this, they just need to iron their game out to achieve the standard they are hoping to achieve this Spring.
