In the bottom of the ninth inning, Chase Meggers came into the game to pitch hit for Ryan Cooney with the game tied at 2-2 and the rest would be history.
As the first pitch hurtled towards him, he hit a double to right field that put Mason Neville at third. The game winning run was 90 feet away.
With only one out remaining, Bryce Boettcher came up to the plate, laser-focused on ending the game. A ball and a strike go by before he squares up to bunt. The ball dribbled back to the pitcher and Mason Neville slid right under Arizona’s catcher’s glove in perfect timing for the 3-2 win. Oregon (15-6, 6-3 Pac-12) has officially clinched the series over the Wildcats (9-12, 3-5 Pac-12).
Grayson Grinsell received the start for the Ducks and kicked it off with a quick first inning that included his first strikeout. When it was Oregon’s turn to hit, Jeffery Heard hit a single for the first hit of the game and Bennett Thompson walked immediately after, but no runners were able to score.
Grinsell was able to have another scoreless inning before Boettcher hit a two-run home run over the left field wall to break open the game and give the Ducks a 2-0 lead. Grinsell would finish his 4.2 inning performance with three hits, three walks and three strikeouts and one earned run after giving up a home run to the Wildcats’ Mason White to cut the deficit to one.
In the top of the fifth, with Arizona runners on the corners, Aroz had a diving catch in shallow right field to keep Oregon in the lead. While the offense couldn’t generate any more runs, the Ducks’ defense kept the Wildcats from scoring. After a ground ball that bounced high, Cooney ran up on the ball near second base and fielded it bare handed to get the out.
But, there wasn’t anything the defense could do when it came to the top of the seventh after Arizona tied the game at 2-2 with a checked-swing double with two outs off of Michael Freund. Then, Oregon responded with a double play to end the Wildcats’ threat.
Bradley Mullan closed the game for the Ducks in the final two innings. He only faced six batters, giving Arizona no opportunities to take the lead.
In the bottom of the ninth, Jacob Walsh started the inning with a groundout to first. That gave Oregon only two more opportunities to score before extra innings started. Anson Aroz was hit by a pitch to put the game-winning run on first base. Neville came in to pinch run for him and when Meggers hit his first double of his career, it put two runners in scoring position for Boettcher. The moment he squared up to the pitcher would end the game.
The last game of the home series against the Wildcats will be Sunday at 12:05 p.m.
