One film that has not been talked about enough and is set to be one of the first big films released this fall is “The Creator” (2023), the newest project by Gareth Edwards. Edwards has had a lot of success in the sci-fi genre with his previous films “Rogue One” (2016) and “Godzilla” (2014), both of which were well received by general audiences.
“The Creator” is set amid a future war between the human race and an advanced artificial intelligence race. The Creator of the AI race has developed a powerful weapon to end the war and the human race. The protagonist, Joshua, played by John David Washington, is an ex-special forces agent tasked with finding The Creator and eliminating them before it is too late. The film is cast with the talents of Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe and Benedict Wong. With the combination of a great sci-fi director, a star studded cast and an unique premise, this film has the potential to be loved by movie-goers.
Over the weekend of Sept. 16-17, “The Creator” held early press screenings for the film and critics initial reactions have all been positive. Critics are amazed by the beautifully-shot cinematography along with the compelling characters in a well-developed world. Critic and host of FilmSpeak Griffin Schiller wrote on social media, “A soulful, nuanced, Lucas-like interrogation of human beliefs/biases [and] our insecurity in the face of something greater. Spectacle [and] heart to the highest order.” With the overwhelming satisfaction from early viewings of the film, it is safe to say “The Creator” has a chance to bring back sci-fi blockbusters.
In the past decade, the genre has seen a decline in quality of films with studios’ over-reliance on franchise films like Star Wars and Marvel that have been lackluster in recent years. The problem with redone franchise films is they lack originality and often become a borderline copy of a previously told story –– fans are burnt out.
“The Creator” has the chance to save the sci-fi genre by bringing a complex story about recent internal struggles of the human race and putting it into a new world that audiences can dive into with amazing spectacle. There have been some amazing sci-fi films in this past decade, but no films have been showcased with this much excitement and positivity for a while. “The Creator” has the chance to bring back originality and new life into sci-fi cinema so this is definitely a film to put on your radar.
