As part of the Preparedness Fair@@http://emc.uoregon.edu/@@ and the 2012 Great Oregon Shakeout,@@http://www.shakeout.org/oregon/@@ the University of Oregon will test its emergency alert system on Oct. 18 with an earthquake drill.
The drill, which will take place at 9:50 a.m., includes sending a test message to all UO e-mail accounts and registered phone numbers. Additionally, certain classrooms will activate Smart Classroom settings and broadcast a test message warning of the drill. During the drill, people will practice earthquake safety and be familiarized with emergency response procedure.
The drill is part of the university’s goal of surpassing conventional emergency preparedness. This approach also includes an Emergency Operations Plan to guide the UO through responding to an emergency and a campus incident management team to manage the details related to campus emergencies and incidents.
Through the 2012 Great Oregon Shakeout, Oregon is joining seven other states in the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history.
