The weekend before school started in 2010, more than 400 University students congregated at the intersection of 14th Avenue and Ferry Street, causing what would eventually be known among students as “the riot.”@@Or in Lyzi-and-Franklin-style, RIOT!! (the two exclamation points were important.@@
Repercussions of the incident were serious — damages to street signs, street cleanup, and overtime pay for over 50 police officers tallied more than $10,000 in expenses for the city of Eugene.
While a similar riot is unlikely to reoccur, Eugene Police Department is taking measures this fall to subdue any incidents that have the potential to escalate.
According to an EPD press release, Eugene police will be working proactively in the campus area, specifically focusing on alcohol and behavioral issues. Partner agencies will be aiding police during this time to have access to enhanced resources and response capabilities.
Last year, Oregon State Police supplied additional officers for support while the Springfield Municipal Jail was opened to Eugene police for those apprehended.
