The Oregon men’s golf team went from tied for last place to sole possession of last in the Ping Arizona Intercollegiate tournament with 66 over par in Tucson, Ariz., Tuesday.
The Ducks had a decent second round, in which they shot a 5-over-par 71 to close the gap between themselves and other teams struggling to improve. However, they were unable to hold their drive into the third round, where they shot a 33 over par to drop 14 shots behind Oregon State, their closest competition.
Individually, Landon Banks finished first from Oregon tied for 62nd at 13 over par. The freshman finished his match with a birdie on 18.
Jay Snyder shot 2-under in the second round with six birdies and only 4 bogeys. His 10-over-par in the third round finished him at 15-over-par (tied for 68th). Chris Dukeminier played inconsistently for most of the day and struggled throughout the tournament, shooting 18-over-par.
Other Ducks finished near the bottom. Ted Whitney and Dustin Pewarchuk finished in 82nd and 83rd place, respectively. Whitney was able to manage three birdies during the tournament, but they were outweighed by the multiple bogeys and double bogeys he struggled with.
Pewarchuk, who before the tournament was named the team leader, finished with a sub-par performance. His third round was a challenge, where he bogeyed six holes and managed to go 4-over-par on the par-4 15th hole.
Matt Millis of Texas shot 3-under- par for the third round and was able to move into a three-way tie for first place at 9-under. Arizona’s Henry Liaw and Arizona State’s Alejandro Canizares were the other golfers who finished tied for first.
