Student Senators allocated more than $19,000 in surplus funds Wednesday night in a short meeting.
The first request of the night came from KD Magazine. Photo Editor Conner Jay, who also works for the Emerald, said the $5,000 the group was requesting would pay a printing debt for the last issue, as well as the costs of the fall issue.
Two weeks ago, the magazine staff presented the same request to the Senate but asked for the money to come from over-realized funds (fee money left over when more students enroll than anticipated). At that time, Senators suggested the surplus account (fee money allocated but not spent by student groups) would be a more appropriate source of funding.
Some Senators expressed concern over whether money allocated this year could be spent on an issue that won’t be printed until next year. Jay said the money could be spent now on entering into a contract with the printer. He added the work for the fall issue needs to start soon, but cannot be done until the staff knows it has the funding.
Eventually, Senators voted to approve the request with Sens. Natalie Kinsey, Erica Anderson and Jeremy Ebner voting no.
The Senate also allocated $175 to the LGBTQA for its upcoming “Queer Prom,” to be held May 19 at 8 p.m. The group said they fundraised several hundred dollars and had services and supplies donated.
The Associated Students for Historical Preservation received $841 to print its journal, which Associate Editor Andrea Blaser said is the centerpiece of what the group does.
Club Sports was also granted requests at the meeting. The Club Cycling team received $567 to reimburse expenses from a recent trip to a national championship, and Club Baseball received $10,800 for an upcoming trip to the NCBA World Series.
Senators pointed out that while Club Sports teams always have big requests, it is because they qualify for national tournaments that bring recognition to the school. The teams also do an impressive amount of fundraising, Senators said.
